FTMO Challenge Review 2026 – How Hard Is It to Pass, Rules Explained & Real Trader Expectations | PropTradingArea

FTMO

4.7 (188 reviews) Forex Trust: 4.6/5 Updated

FTMO has been around since 2015 — which means they've survived two regulatory crackdowns, a MetaQuotes licensing crisis, and enough industry collapses to fill a separate article. Nobody writes angry Reddit threads about FTMO anymore. At some point that stops being luck and starts being a track record.

About FTMO

Prague, 2015. Over a decade of operation, hundreds of millions paid out to traders, and a regulatory track record that survived everything the industry threw at it between 2023 and 2025. FTMO didn't get to the top of this industry by accident — they got there by running a two-phase evaluation that's demanding but honest, paying out when they said they would, and not changing the rules overnight when it suited them.
Two phases — the FTMO Challenge and Verification. Accounts up to $400K. Profit split up to 90%. Clean T&Cs, low hidden rules score, and a community that's been around long enough to have actual institutional memory. If you're looking for a benchmark against which to measure every other firm on this site, FTMO is it.

Pros

  • - Industry benchmark for 11 years — the firm every other prop firm compares itself to on their homepage
  • - 4.8/5 on Trustpilot with 42,188 reviews and 92% five-star — the cleanest trust profile in the industry
  • - Hidden Rules Meter 1.7/10 — rules are clear, documented and written where you can find them before you pay
  • - No time limit on either model — trade at your own pace without artificial deadline pressure
  • - Capital allocation up to $1M with Supreme Prime Status — one of the higher funded limits available
  • - FTMO Points system — challenge fees can be converted to points and reused, softening the blow of a failed attempt

Cons

  • - $400K standard allocation cap per strategy — traders running multiple accounts with the same strategy hit this limit faster than expected
  • - News trading restricted on standard funded accounts — allowed during evaluation but prohibited within 2 minutes before and after high-impact news once funded
  • - Very high Crypto commissions per trade
  • - Discretionary risk management — FTMO can determine violations at their own discretion, including behavior not explicitly listed in the prohibited practices

Trader Tip

If you're running EAs, check the $400K aggregate strategy cap — it applies across all your accounts combined, not per account. On standard funded accounts, set an alert for 2 minutes before major news releases. If you're near the 8-10% max loss range and not actively trading, the 30-day inactivity clock is running.

funded on first try

Wanted a firm with a platform i already knew how to use. the scaling lets you double your account size every time you clear a payout milestone. i can run my own ea on their platform and it ran without any weird restrictions. leverage is reasonable, not the reckless stuff that blows beginners up. i held positions over the weekend a bunch of times and never got penalised. they passed the only test that matters, they paid me.

not perfect but solid

Came for teh cheap eval, stayed for the surprisingly decent payouts. they honoured a payout even though i fat fingered a lot size, very fair. overnight swaps are charged but they are upfront about the numbers. i never had to chase support, they actually closed my ticket the same day. bro the consistency rule is generous compared to the firms that cap you hard. earned a cautious thumbs up from a guy who trusts no one.

support came through

Honestly just wanted to see if any of these prop firms are legit at all. their dashboard is genuinely useful, learned stuff about my own trading just looking at it. the drawdown is calculated on balance not equity which honestly saved me a few times. i got a small payout bonus for hitting a milestone which was unexpected. verdict: boring in the best possible way.

took my money and gave it back with interest

So i finally caved and bougth a challenge here after months of lurking. they let me run my algo as long as it is not some latency arbitrage exploit. teh rules pdf is long but at least nothing is buried in tiny print. tbh email notifications can lag a bit which is mildly annoying but not a dealbreaker. i would rank them top three of everything i have tried this year.

mixed but mostly good

Been with this firm for a few months now and honestly no major complaints. tbh teh weekly market recap they send is actually worth reading. the payout actually hit my acount in like two days which i did not expect. i passed phase one then immediately fumbled phase two before pulling it back in the last week. recommend, but read the consistency rule twice before you start.

paid on time every time

i blew my first account in two days like an absolute clown. i moved up an account tier and the upgrade process took all of five minutes. the second phase target was lower than phase one which kept me sane. i appreciated that they email you before a rule change instead of springing it. can you guys get in contact with this firm if I provide an acc number? their customer support hasn't replied in 7 days. i breached the daily loss limit on a tilt day, fully my fault, they did nothing wrong.

rules are strict but fair

Went with the smallest account size to keep the risk low while i learned. fees are reasonable for what you get and the retake discount softens the blow. the weekly market recap they send is actually worth reading. they paused my consistency tracker when i asked for a couple weeks off … super flexible. i like that they show your stats in real time instead of a delayed dashboard. the trailing drawdown is reasonable if you size your positions like an adult. not flawless but the good outweighs the annoying by a wide margin.

solid all rounder

Started here as a complete beginner and somehow survived. they refunded my eval fee when i got funded which was a nice surprise. their server uptime during the last nfp was flawless from where i sat. minimum trading days felt forced at first but i get it now, it protects both sides. support answered a dumb question of mine with an actual example instead of a canned reply. consistency rule almost got me once because i did not read the fine print … my bad not theirs. a safe pick if you are tired of gambling on sketchy firms.

no complaints really

Wanted something with weekend holding allowed so i landed here. the payout actually hit my account in like two days which i did not expect. partial closes and trailing stops both worked exactly like they should. i had a losing month and they did not nuke my account, just the usual rules applied.

Mostly Good Experience

they popped up on a youtube ad and against my better judgement i clicked. had one weird order rejection and they tracked it to a platform bug and credited me back. the news trading rule confused me at first but the faq actually explains why it exists. no surprise inactivity fees which i half expected to get hit with. i compared them against three others and they had the best balance of price and rules. i came in skeptical and i am leaving funded, draw your own conclusions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is FTMO best suited for?
FTMO is best suited for disciplined traders who can follow strict risk management rules and maintain consistency over time. It is not ideal for high-risk or impulsive strategies, as rule violations quickly lead to account failure.
What causes most traders to fail the FTMO Challenge?
The most common reasons are breaking the daily loss limit, overleveraging, and inconsistent risk management. Many traders underestimate how strict the rules are and treat the challenge like a high-risk opportunity instead of a controlled evaluation.
How strict is FTMO compared to other prop firms like E8 or For Traders?
FTMO is generally stricter in terms of risk management and discipline requirements. While firms like E8 or For Traders may feel slightly more flexible, FTMO sets the benchmark for rule clarity and enforcement, which is why it’s often used as the industry standard.
What happens after you pass FTMO’s evaluation process?
After passing the Challenge and Verification stages, traders receive a funded account with profit splits and scaling opportunities. However, maintaining discipline remains critical, as funded accounts still follow strict risk rules.
How realistic is it to make consistent income with FTMO?
It is realistic, but only for traders who treat it like a professional trading environment. FTMO rewards consistency and risk control rather than aggressive profit chasing, making it suitable for long-term traders rather than short-term gamblers.
Always do your own research. Never risk more than you can afford to lose. Last updated:
