FTMO
FTMO has been around since 2015 — which means they've survived two regulatory crackdowns, a MetaQuotes licensing crisis, and enough industry collapses to fill a separate article. Nobody writes angry Reddit threads about FTMO anymore. At some point that stops being luck and starts being a track record.

Who Is This Firm For?
About FTMO
Two phases — the FTMO Challenge and Verification. Accounts up to $400K. Profit split up to 90%. Clean T&Cs, low hidden rules score, and a community that's been around long enough to have actual institutional memory. If you're looking for a benchmark against which to measure every other firm on this site, FTMO is it.
- Founded
- 2015
- Max Allocation
- $400,000
- Leverage
- 1:100
- Commissions
- $3/lot
Pros
- - Industry benchmark for 11 years — the firm every other prop firm compares itself to on their homepage
- - 4.8/5 on Trustpilot with 42,188 reviews and 92% five-star — the cleanest trust profile in the industry
- - Hidden Rules Meter 1.7/10 — rules are clear, documented and written where you can find them before you pay
- - No time limit on either model — trade at your own pace without artificial deadline pressure
- - Capital allocation up to $1M with Supreme Prime Status — one of the higher funded limits available
- - FTMO Points system — challenge fees can be converted to points and reused, softening the blow of a failed attempt
Cons
- - $400K standard allocation cap per strategy — traders running multiple accounts with the same strategy hit this limit faster than expected
- - News trading restricted on standard funded accounts — allowed during evaluation but prohibited within 2 minutes before and after high-impact news once funded
- - Very high Crypto commissions per trade
- - Discretionary risk management — FTMO can determine violations at their own discretion, including behavior not explicitly listed in the prohibited practices
not perfect but solid
Came for teh cheap eval, stayed for the surprisingly decent payouts. they honoured a payout even though i fat fingered a lot size, very fair. overnight swaps are charged but they are upfront about the numbers. i never…— Verified Trader (fatima r.) See all reviews
If you're running EAs, check the $400K aggregate strategy cap — it applies across all your accounts combined, not per account. On standard funded accounts, set an alert for 2 minutes before major news releases. If you're near the 8-10% max loss range and not actively trading, the 30-day inactivity clock is running.

FTMO - Forbidden Trading Practices
The full list is published on FTMO's website & updated from time to time. Core prohibited practices include:
- HFT & tick scalping
- Latency arbitrage & statistical arbitrage
- Martingale & grid strategies
- Gap trading
- Copy trading from third parties
- Exploiting platform errors or mis-pricing
- One-sided bets & account rolling
FTMO reserves the right to update this list & to determine at their discretion whether specific behavior qualifies as a violation — including behavior not explicitly listed. If something feels like gaming the system, it probably is.
News Trading
FTMO allows news trading during evaluation on both models. On standard funded accounts, trading is restricted within 2 minutes before and after high-impact news. Swing accounts have no news trading restrictions on either evaluation or funded stage.
Expert Advisors
EAs are allowed. A few conditions worth knowing:
- Maximum 2,000 server requests per day
- Popular third-party EAs may accidentally exceed the $400K max capital allocation limit across multiple users running the same bot — which can lead to account suspension through no fault of your own
- Switching between EA and manual trading between challenge and funded account is not allowed
Copy Trading
- Between your own FTMO accounts → allowed, subject to the $400K max capital allocation limit
- From third parties → strictly prohibited
- Coordinating trades with other users → not allowed
The Two Models
Everything at FTMO starts with choosing between two evaluation structures — which is either a refreshingly simple decision or proof that 11 years of operation taught them that most traders don't need more than two options.
| 1-Step | 2-Step | |
|---|---|---|
| Phases | 1 | 2 (Challenge + Verification) |
| Profit Target | 10% | 10% / 5% |
| Daily Loss | 5% | 5% |
| Max Loss | 10% | 10% |
| Time Limit | None | None |
| Max Allocation | $400K | $400K |
Both models lead to the same place — the FTMO Trader Program. The 1-Step gets you there faster. The 2-Step gives you a second phase at lower target to confirm consistency before you're funded.
Capital Allocation Limits
- Standard → $400K max per strategy per person
- Prime Status → $600K
- Supreme Prime Status → $1M
The $400K limit applies in aggregate — meaning if you run multiple accounts with the same strategy, the total across all of them cannot exceed $400K. FTMO monitors this & accounts using identical strategies that collectively exceed the limit may be suspended.
Risk Management Rules
FTMO doesn't publish a fixed list of every prohibited strategy — instead they define a framework of what "market standard risk management" looks like & reserve the right to determine violations at their discretion. The practical rules:
- No substantially larger position sizes compared to your other trades
- No substantially different number of positions compared to your pattern
- No repeated high Risk per Trade Idea that creates cumulative exposure in the same or correlated symbols
- No overleveraging, overexposure or one-sided bets
- No account rolling — buying multiple challenges to sacrifice some while passing others
The discretionary element is real — FTMO can determine that certain behavior qualifies as a Forbidden Trading Practice without that specific practice being explicitly listed. This is standard across the industry but worth knowing upfront.
Personal Use & Account Sharing
- Only you can trade your account — no third-party access, no account management services
- No coordinating trades with other users
- Legal entities may only share access with top management — not general employees
- Same device or payment method shared with another user must be disclosed to FTMO
The last point is unusual — FTMO explicitly asks you to notify them if you share a payment method or device with another user. Worth keeping in mind if you're in a household with another trader.
Inactivity Rule
Two separate triggers worth knowing:
- No trade for 30 consecutive days → account suspended
- Loss between 8-10% of initial capital held for more than 30 days → FTMO may terminate the account
The second rule is less obvious & catches traders who are sitting near their max loss limit without actively managing the situation. If your account is bleeding slowly & you're not trading, the clock is running.
FTMO Points
- 1 FTMO Point = €1.00
- Can be used to purchase FTMO services & products
- Cannot be exchanged for cash
- Have an expiration date — visible at purchase & in the User Area
- Awarded through: challenge fee refunds, FTMO Trader Program rewards & affiliate program
The points system is a loyalty mechanism that keeps value within the FTMO ecosystem — you get points back when things don't work out, but they can only be spent on more FTMO services. Useful if you plan to stay, less useful if you're testing the waters.
Data Usage
Section 16.3 of the Terms is worth reading.
FTMO has access to your simulated trading data & shares it with other members of the FTMO Group. This information may be used in connection with trading in financial products or to improve services. Importantly — the data is always anonymised before sharing, which distinguishes FTMO's approach from some other firms that use trading data without this disclosure or this protection.
Withdrawal From Agreement
- 14-day withdrawal right — but only if you haven't opened a first trade
- Opening your first simulated trade waives the withdrawal right immediately
- After first trade → no refund under any circumstances
Standard across the industry — but the 14-day window is real & useful if you change your mind before you start.
Final Take
FTMO's 4.8/5 on 42,188 Trustpilot reviews — with 92% five-star — isn't a marketing number. It's 11 years of consistent payouts, clear rules & a community large enough that most questions have already been answered publicly somewhere.
The structure is familiar, the rules are documented & the discretionary risk management framework is the same one every serious firm uses — FTMO just wrote it down more clearly than most. After all, every other firm compares itself to FTMO on their homepage — which is either the highest compliment in the industry or just proof that being first matters more than most people admit.

Needed a firm that allowed my EA and these guys actually do. their reset option after a breach is cheaper than buying a whole new eval. they cap the max lot size which annoyed me at first but it protects you. honestly the rules made my retail trading better too, forced discipline and all that. the consistency rule is generous compared to the firms that cap you hard. the challenge rules are strict but at least they are written in plain english for once. sticking with them for now … they earned it.
Solid But Not Flawless
Came over from another firm that shall not be named after they ghosted me. i like that the daily loss limit resets at a sane hour for my timezone. i held positions over the weekend a bunch of times and never got penalised. i had a margin scare during cpi and the platform held up without freezing. their content creators seem to actually trade the product instead of just reading scripts. i passed phase one then immediately fumbled phase two before pulling it back in the last week. no regrets, would hand them my eval fee again.
platform is rock solid
Wanted lower targets and a calmer ruleset and this fit the bill. the demo and funded feeds matched closely enough that i trusted my backtests. the eval took me like 27 trading days total … not fast not slow … just fair. support replied way faster than my actual broker which is kinda sad when you think about it. the scaling plan is actually motivating instead of being some impossible carrot on a stick. happy to keep them as my main while i test others on the side.
does what it says
Not gonna lie i went in expecting teh worst. platform was stable the whole time, no random disconnects during news. there is a discord and staff actually show up in it occasionally. i scaled twice and each bump was a real size jump not some token gesture. man spreads widen a touch on the new york session but still nothing to write home about. the funded payout split started at 80/20 and scaled up which felt fair.
not bad at all
Picked these guys mostly becuase of teh discount code floating around. the demo and funded feeds matched closely enough that i trusted my backtests. the eval took me like 27 trading days total, not fast not slow, just fair. payouts are biweekly on funded accounts which is way better than the monthly firms. fees are reasonable for what you get and the retake discount softens the blow. they refunded my eval fee when i got funded which was a nice surprise. idk but three payouts deep and still no nasty surprises, that is my whole verdict.
does the job
Switched over when my old firm changed thier drawdown rules overnight. dude honestly teh rules made my retail trading better too … forced discipline and all that. their economic calendar integration is a small thing but i use it daily. i moved up an account tier and the upgrade process took all of five minutes. the funded payout split started at 80/20 and scaled up which felt fair. happy enough that i talked two friends into joining.
three payouts deep
My prop firm group chat would not shut up about them so i caved. slippage outside of high impact news is basically a non issue for me. crypto and wire both supported, i did wire and it hit my bank in two business days. the challenge timer is generous, i never felt rushed into bad trades. the profit target on phase one is ambitious but not insane. leverage is reasonable, not the reckless stuff that blows beginners up. will probably grab a second account to diversify my strategies.
cheap eval real payouts
bought the cheapest account they had just to test the waters. i renewed my challenge this month which is basically my whole review right there. i tested the live account against the demo with the same setups and it matched. spreads are fine … nothing crazy … nothing terrible … it is a prop firm not a charity. their economic calendar integration is a small thing but i use it daily. four stars … the missing one is just me being picky about the ui.
Good value for the price
Signed up after seeing a discount code and have not regretted it. The KYC went through in under an hour and my evaluation account was live immediately. Simple and painless.
Slippage was minimal
Evaluation took me 27 trading days total. Not fast, not slow. Fair considering the profit target.
